Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a career that spanned 14 years and finished on a Sri Lankan ground.
Maxwell, 38, made the announcement on Monday, NewsFirst reported. He last played for Australia in their final match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, against Oman.
He retires having represented Australia in 149 ODIs, 130 T20 internationals and seven Tests, winning two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups — in 2015 and 2023 — and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021.
The innings that defined him
Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup remains the benchmark of his career: the first double century by an Australian in a one-day international, and the first by any player in a chase. He made it while barely able to run, cramping through the closing overs of a match Australia had been losing comprehensively.
That innings captured what made him difficult to categorise — a batter whose range of strokes had no obvious precedent, and a part-time off-spinner useful enough to bowl in the toughest overs of a World Cup.
A Sri Lankan postscript
Maxwell’s international career ended in Sri Lanka. Australia’s last match of the 2026 T20 World Cup was against Oman at Pallekele, Kandy, on 20 February 2026 — a nine-wicket Australian win, according to ESPNcricinfo’s scorecard for the tie, in which Maxwell did not bat but took wickets. Australia had already been eliminated.
Two retirements, not one
This is Maxwell’s second retirement announcement, and the two are easily confused. In June 2025 he retired from one-day internationals only, at the age of 36, after Australia’s Champions Trophy semi-final exit, citing the physical toll on a leg he broke in 2022 — and remained available for T20 internationals with the 2026 T20 World Cup in view. Searches for the current news still return that earlier announcement, under headlines that read much the same.
Tuesday’s news is the full stop: retirement from all international formats, after the T20 World Cup campaign he had stayed on for.
Not reported
The filing does not carry Maxwell’s own statement or any Cricket Australia comment, give his aggregate runs and wickets across formats, or say whether he will continue in domestic or franchise cricket — he withdrew from the IPL 2026 auction in December 2025. No second verified newsroom had carried the retirement announcement itself at the time of writing; the career and final-match details above are cross-checked against ESPNcricinfo’s records, which are too old to cite as a source for today’s news.
