Students at the University of Kelaniya held a torch-lit protest on Tuesday night, demanding hostel accommodation for every student who has applied for it and accusing the government of answering their grievances with repression.
The demonstration began in front of the university and was organised by the University of Kelaniya Main Students’ Union, Hiru News reported in a filing timed at 12.30 a.m. Colombo time on Wednesday.
Protesters said the government had not provided a solution to any of the problems students have raised. They further alleged that rather than resolving those problems the government had “unleashed repression”, and that the university administration was acting as a puppet of the government.
The demands
The students set out five demands:
- Hostel places for every student who has applied for accommodation
- Urgent steps to build new hostels
- Resolution of sanitation problems on the campus
- A remedy for the shortage of lecture halls
- Construction of new reading halls with proper facilities
They also called for an end to what they described as repressive measures taken in place of solutions.
A same-day fire, but no stated link
A fire destroyed a room and all the belongings of its residents at a University of Kelaniya women’s hostel on Tuesday morning, a separate incident this desk reported earlier. Four fire engines were deployed and the cause has not been determined.
The two events fall on the same day at the same university, and the protest’s leading demand concerns hostel accommodation. But the Hiru News report does not state that the fire prompted the protest, does not mention the fire at all, and carries no claim from the students connecting the two. No causal link is asserted here.
A caution: this is a recurring dispute
Hostel shortages at Kelaniya are a long-running grievance rather than a new one. Protests under near-identical headlines — students demanding a new hostel, students saying hostel problems remain unsolved — have been reported in previous years. Readers should not treat archive coverage of earlier Kelaniya hostel protests as describing this week’s event, and figures from earlier rounds are not transferable.
Not reported
The filing does not estimate how many students took part, say how long the protest lasted, or report whether police attended. It names no student leader and carries no response from the university administration, the University Grants Commission or the Ministry of Higher Education to any of the allegations made.
It does not say how many students have applied for hostel accommodation or how many were refused — the figure on which the central demand turns.
Single source. No other verified newsroom had filed on the protest at the time of writing. Searches returned only Kelaniya hostel protest reports from earlier years and coverage of Tuesday’s separate hostel fire. Ada Derana remains unreachable from this desk.
