A fire broke out in a room at a women’s hostel of the University of Kelaniya on Tuesday morning, destroying all the personal belongings of the students living in it.

Four fire engines were deployed to bring the blaze under control, Hiru News reported at 11.54am Colombo time.

The students were away when the fire started and no one was inside the room, the Daily Mirror reported. No injuries are reported in either filing.

The cause has not been determined.

What is not yet known

Neither filing reports how many students lived in the room, whether the fire spread beyond it, or whether the hostel was evacuated.

Neither gives the time the fire started, names the hostel, or says whether an investigation has been opened. Neither carries a statement from the university administration, the Fire Brigade or the police, and neither reports what arrangements have been made for the students who lost their possessions.

Corroborated. Both verified newsrooms filed on Tuesday — Hiru late in the morning as the response was under way, the Daily Mirror in the early afternoon with the outcome. The two accounts are consistent and complementary: Hiru supplies the scale of the response, the Daily Mirror the damage and the absence of anyone in the room.

This article will be updated if a cause or any further detail is reported.
