Police have recovered 14 kilogrammes of narcotics from a parcel abandoned beside the Jaffna–Mannar main road near Pooneryn Vidyalaya, after a motorcyclist dropped it and rode off.

The consignment was heroin and methamphetamine, the drug known locally as “ICE”, NewsFirst reported. Hiru News gave the weight as 14 kilogrammes.

How the seizure happened

A police team on roadblock duty signalled two suspicious motorcycles to stop for inspection, according to NewsFirst. Both riders ignored the order and accelerated away. One of them dropped a parcel at the scene as he fled. Officers recovered it and found the drugs inside.

Hiru’s account is shorter and describes a single person arriving by motorcycle and leaving the parcel. NewsFirst’s fuller version — two machines, a failed stop, one parcel discarded in flight — accounts for the same outcome and is the more complete of the two.

No arrests have been reported. Both filings say investigations are continuing.

Context

Pooneryn sits on the causeway route linking Jaffna with Mannar across the Jaffna lagoon, a corridor that carries traffic between the peninsula and the mainland Northern Province. Neither report states where the consignment was thought to have originated or where it was bound, gives a street value, or names the police division leading the inquiry.
