A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a bus on the Athurugiriya–Godagama road, near the Athurugiriya police station.

A bus travelling from Meegoda towards Athurugiriya braked sharply, and a motorcycle following behind struck it, Athurugiriya Police said, as reported by Hiru News.

The injured rider was admitted to Homagama Base Hospital, where he later died. He was a 36-year-old resident of Batawala in the Padukka area.

A second motorcyclist, travelling in the opposite direction, collided with the first motorcycle and sustained minor injuries, police said.

Context

Road deaths remain among Sri Lanka’s most persistent public safety problems. This desk reported this week that the country records about 2,536 road deaths annually.

Motorcyclists are heavily over-represented in that toll. Three riders were killed in separate overnight crashes on 31 October, and five people died in separate road accidents reported on 3 November. These are distinct incidents and should not be read as a single running total.
