A 61-year-old man has been arrested in the Kalmunai area of Ampara with a stock of more than six kilogrammes of illegally held narcotics.
The arrest was made during a joint operation by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Kalmunai office of the Department of Excise, NewsFirst reported on Wednesday afternoon.
The person taken into custody is a resident of the Kalmunai area, the report said.
What the filing does not establish
The report is brief and leaves most of the case open. It does not identify which narcotic was recovered, or give a street value. It does not say when or where the operation was carried out, which naval command or unit took part, how the stock was concealed, or whether the suspect has been produced before a court.
It does not state whether the suspect was handed to the Excise Department, the Police Narcotics Bureau or another agency for onward proceedings, and no officer is quoted.
A caution on identification
Joint NavyβExcise narcotics arrests in the Eastern Province are frequent, and reports of them share a near-identical headline shape β an age, a weight and a town. Searches for this case return other arrests in and around Kalmunai with closely similar details, including differences in the exact locality and date.
Only the facts carried in the NewsFirst filing are reported here. Details circulating elsewhere that this desk could not verify against a datable source β including a more precise locality, a packet count and an operation date β are deliberately omitted rather than merged in. Ada Derana, which appears to have covered the same arrest, is currently returning HTTP 403 on every fetch route available to this desk, so its account could not be dated or read directly and is not cited.
Context
The Navy has been the lead interdiction agency in a run of narcotics cases this year, working both at sea and alongside civil agencies ashore. A separate operation south of the island this week saw a multi-day trawler taken into custody on narcotics suspicion; the two cases are unconnected.
