The Government Analyst has been ordered to explain why forensic reports in the investigation into the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena have not been submitted, NewsFirst reported on Wednesday. His death is being investigated as having occurred under suspicious circumstances.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the order, directing the Government Analyst to account for the delay in forwarding the reports to the Colombo Crimes Division. The Magistrate also issued notice on the Judicial Medical Officer to submit the complete post-mortem report to court.

One report outstanding

The order followed investigating officers telling the court that a forensic report on four types of medication recovered from the location where Chandrasena was found dead has still not been received. All other reports in the case have already been submitted.

The phone evidence

The Colombo Crimes Division told the Magistrate that the company concerned had confirmed by email that data stored on Chandrasena’s mobile phone would be preserved for a further three months.

Investigators said requests had been sent to two institutions, including a company based in Singapore, to obtain data from the phone. The court also granted permission for a request seeking an order directing the relevant telecommunications provider to convert the eSIM into a standard SIM card for investigative purposes.

Police filed a further report stating that responses had been received to requests made under previous court orders.

The case is due to be called again on 2 December for further reports.

Chandrasena headed SriLankan Airlines and has featured in separate corruption proceedings connected to the national carrier.
