The dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine has said a video circulating on social media, presented as evidence that ragging is taking place at the university, is entirely false.
The video stems from a private dispute on 2 November between a group of third-year students and a group of students in senior years, the dean said in a statement reported by Hiru News on 4 November.
The footage has been wrongly interpreted as a ragging incident with the intention of damaging the university’s reputation, he said.
The faculty’s position
The university has been maintained as a ragging-free zone for several years, the dean said, and first- and second-year students pursue their studies in a free environment without obstruction.
He added that certain groups appear to be attempting to put false information into circulation in order to pursue private agendas.
Investigations are under way
The statement says the university has already begun its own inquiry into those who acted in breach of discipline in connection with the incident, and that police investigations have also been initiated.
The two statements sit together uneasily and the filing does not reconcile them: the video is described as false, while disciplinary and police investigations are said to be running into conduct connected to the same incident. What is being investigated — the conduct in the video, the circulation of the video, or both — is not specified.
The document itself
Hiru published the statement as an image. It is a media release on university letterhead giving the address as Kandy Road, Yakkala, dated 2026.11.04 and signed by the dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. The denial is therefore a formal written statement from the faculty, not a remark attributed to an official.
Not reported
The dean is not named in the filing. The report does not describe what the video shows, say where it was circulating or how widely, or give the nature of the private dispute. It does not say how many students are under investigation, which police division is involved, or whether the University Grants Commission or the Ministry of Higher Education has been informed. No complainant or student body is quoted, and no other verified newsroom had carried the statement at the time of writing.
