Dhamma Pinkett of St Peter’s College, Colombo, won the boys’ under-13 70 metres hurdles final at the 55th John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championship at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama on Thursday.
Pinkett completed the race in 11.87 seconds.
The championship is one of the largest school athletics meets on the Sri Lankan calendar. More than 7,000 athletes from 1,100 schools across the island are due to take part, competing in four age groups for competitors under 15.
The meet runs until Saturday, 7 November. The senior division of the same championship was held at the Diyagama stadium last month.
The junior competition has a long record of identifying athletes who go on to represent Sri Lanka at national and international level, and the under-15 age bands are closely watched by provincial selectors.
The event is organised with the backing of Hiru News, which reported the result.
