A specialist doctor attached to Polonnaruwa General Hospital was killed on Friday afternoon when the car he was travelling in collided head-on with a tipper truck on the Minneriya–Habarana main road.
The crash happened at about 3.00 p.m., Hiru News reported. The doctor, who was about 50 and lived in the Polonnaruwa area, was seriously injured and taken to Habarana Divisional Hospital, where he died.
His body is being held at the Habarana hospital and is to be taken to Polonnaruwa General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. He has not been named.
The car was extensively damaged in the collision. The cause of the crash has not been established, and Minneriya Police are continuing investigations.
The Minneriya–Habarana stretch carries heavy tipper traffic alongside long-distance vehicles and has seen repeated serious collisions, including a three-vehicle crash near Habarana earlier this year.
