The government is holding a National Trade Union Conference in Colombo on Saturday under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, marking two years since the National People’s Power administration took office.

The conference was scheduled to begin at 9.30 a.m. at the P.D. Sirisena Grounds in Colombo, Daily FT reported. It is expected to bring together representatives from across the trade union sector.

Hiru News reported the same event at the same venue and start time, describing it as organised under the theme “Apē Āndduva” — “Our Government”.

Two renderings of the same slogan

The two outlets translate the government’s second-anniversary slogan differently. The Sinhala is “අපේ ආණ්ඩුව - වසර දෙකයි - රටට සුබයි”. Hiru’s English rendering follows the Sinhala closely as “Our Government – Two Years – Good for the Country”, while Daily FT gives the conference theme as “Our Government, Two Years Strong – Progress for All”.

Both describe the same slogan and the same event; the difference is one of translation rather than fact.

Context

The National People’s Power came to power in 2024, and the conference is one of a series of events marking the administration’s two-year milestone. Trade unions formed a significant part of the movement’s organisational base, and the Saturday gathering is the sector-specific instalment of that anniversary programme.

Neither filing lists the unions expected to attend, gives an expected turnout, or indicates whether the President will announce policy at the event. Both were published before the conference opened, so neither reports what was said.
