The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level marine advisory warning of rough seas and strong winds along Sri Lanka’s northern, western, southern and eastern coastal waters, ahead of the Vesak holiday weekend, Ada Derana reported.

The advisory, issued on Friday, covers the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. The Met Department said those waters will be “very rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 60–65 kmph” and the warning will remain in effect until 4.30pm on Saturday (30 May).

Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected zones have been urged to remain vigilant. The advisory lands as inland weather authorities continue to monitor heavy showers across the south-western quarter, where the Irrigation Department earlier this morning issued a flood warning for the Kalu River basin covering the same Vesak window (Friday morning through Sunday morning), with Kukule reservoir spill gates already open.

The Met Department uses a four-tier marine advisory ladder — Green, Yellow, Amber and Red — with Amber indicating dangerous conditions requiring active caution. Sea conditions are expected to ease from late Saturday into Sunday as the front moves through.
