Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha is scheduled to deliver a special statement in Parliament on May 5, 2026 regarding the alleged misplacement of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury, ministry sources said Thursday.
The Finance Ministry will use the statement to formally brief parliament on the cyber theft and the steps taken since the breach was detected. The Ministry has consistently described the incident as the “alleged misplacement” of USD 2.5 million in a foreign-debt servicing payment.
The May 5 briefing date had been previously requested by Treasury Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma when he initially asked the Committee on Public Finance to defer his appearance until after the planned statement. Suriyapperuma later reversed that position and confirmed he will attend the COPF at 1:00pm on Thursday at the request of Chairman Dr. Harsha de Silva.
Senior Finance Ministry officials, alongside the Secretary, are expected to face questions from the committee on the alleged loss. Investigations are continuing with assistance from the Australian Federal Police.
