The Colombo Crime Division has recorded statements from 15 people, including former Sri Lanka cricket captain Aravinda de Silva, in its investigation into the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena, NewsFirst reported on Saturday morning.
The Division said further inquiries were being carried out on the basis of the post-mortem report. Chandrasena’s remains have been handed over to the Government Analyst’s Department and the Judicial Medical Officer for further examination, with the autopsy itself conducted by a five-member panel of specialist forensic doctors.
Chandrasena was found dead on Friday morning at a relative’s residence in 5th Lane, Kollupitiya. He was the central accused in the long-running Airbus bribery case and had been granted bail on May 5 before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama issued a warrant for his arrest on Wednesday after the Bribery Commission moved to revoke that bail. The death came one day after the warrant was issued.
The probe was transferred to the Colombo Crime Division on Friday and is being overseen by Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena. SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has demanded an independent inquiry, alleging Chandrasena had submitted an affidavit naming threats from senior CIABOC officials, while SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa told reporters that investigators had pressured Chandrasena to implicate his father, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
NewsFirst did not list the other 14 people whose statements have been recorded, or specify Aravinda de Silva’s connection to the matter under investigation. The former cricketer has previously held senior positions in Sri Lankan sports administration and corporate boards.
