Hanthana is a popular hiking destination near Kandy, but its steep trails and unpredictable weather have led to multiple rescue incidents in recent years. Authorities have repeatedly urged hikers to travel in groups and inform local police before attempting challenging routes.
The incident serves as a safety reminder during the Avurudu holiday period, when outdoor activities see a sharp increase across the island.
