Australia announced on April 13 that a woman will lead its army for the first time in history, as part of a broader reshuffle of the country’s defence force leadership.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, currently the chief of joint capabilities, will become chief of army in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
Coyle’s appointment comes as Australia’s military faces growing pressure to increase the representation of women in senior ranks. The defence force has been grappling with allegations of systematic sexual harassment and discrimination, prompting reform efforts in recent years.
The announcement is part of a wider defence leadership refresh aimed at modernising the force’s command structure.
