The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has announced that all locally manufactured single-use sanitary towels sold in Sri Lanka must carry the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) Product Certification Mark with effect from October 8, 2026.
The directive was issued under Section 12(2) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 9 of 2003. It prohibits manufacturers, packers, distributors, transporters, store owners and traders from manufacturing, distributing, storing or selling locally produced sanitary towels unless they comply with the required SLS certification standards.
The measure is intended to guarantee a minimum quality and safety threshold for a product used by millions of women, bringing local production in line with formal national standards. Certification marks such as the SLS label are designed to give consumers assurance that goods have been tested against defined criteria.
Manufacturers have been given until the October deadline to bring their products into compliance. After that date, non-certified locally produced sanitary towels will be barred from the market, and traders handling them could face action under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
