The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has warned the public about fake and misleading information being circulated on several social media platforms regarding civil aviation matters.
In a public notice, the authority described the material being shared as “entirely false, misleading, and unauthorized,” stressing that no such statement had been issued by the Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer to any media institution or social media platform.
CAASL said it is taking steps to initiate legal action against the individuals and parties responsible for creating, publishing and disseminating the fabricated reports. It urged the public, media organisations and social media users to act responsibly when sharing aviation-related information, and to verify details through officially issued statements and the authority’s own communication channels.
The warning is the latest from a state institution pushing back against online disinformation. It follows the Central Bank’s caution over misleading economic claims spreading on TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts, and comes amid wider scrutiny of Sri Lanka-linked content, including a BBC Panorama investigation into AI-driven disinformation pages. CAASL did not specify the nature of the false aviation claims now in circulation.
