The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on April 17 rejected a bail application by former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena, ordering him to remain in remand custody until April 28.

Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama made the ruling after reviewing submissions from Bribery Commission officials and Chandrasena’s defence team. The court extended his detention as investigations into the high-profile Airbus aircraft procurement bribery case continue.

Chandrasena was arrested on March 12 on charges of accepting bribes during the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the national carrier. Arrest warrants were also issued for former chairman Shamindra Rajapaksa and former board member Priyanka Wijenayaka, who remain at large.

The April 28 hearing is the next key date in this case, one of several active accountability proceedings working through Sri Lankan courts.
