The Court of Appeal announced on April 10 that it will deliver its order on May 8 on whether to grant leave to proceed with petitions challenging the government’s post-internship medical appointment process.
The petitions target the appointment system for doctors who have completed their internship — the same issue that was at the centre of the nine-day GMOA strike that ended on April 6.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association had argued that the Health Ministry’s revised posting process undermined career structure and specialist development pathways. While the strike was suspended after the government agreed to formal talks, the legal challenge in the Court of Appeal represents a parallel track of the dispute.
May 8 now becomes a key watchdate for the GMOA-government standoff. The court’s decision on whether to hear the petitions could either reinforce the government’s appointment system or open a judicial avenue for the doctors’ demands.
The matter comes as the no-confidence motion against Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody dominates today’s parliamentary agenda.
