Train services were disrupted on Monday afternoon following a derailment at Dematagoda Railway Station in Colombo, the Railway Department said.

According to the department, services have been disrupted between Colombo Fort and Kalutara South, and on the line to Rambukkana. The cause of the derailment had not been disclosed at the time of the announcement and no estimated restoration time was given.

Dematagoda sits at a key junction north-east of Colombo Fort that handles coastal-line services running south as well as services moving inland toward Rambukkana and the up-country lines. Disruptions there typically ripple across the western suburban network.

The incident is the third significant rail disruption in just over a week. The Sagarika intercity service derailed at Wadduwa on April 24 and again at Kompannavidiya on April 25. The Kandy line has been operating below normal since Cyclone Ditwah recovery work reduced timetable capacity earlier this year.
