The Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) has issued an urgent public warning about a fraud ring using a fake website and three phone numbers to harvest personal and financial information under the false pretext of collecting data for the country’s new Digital Identity Card programme.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the DRP said the fraudulent website — https://drpgov-lk.com — has been designed to closely mimic the department’s official online presence. Members of the public are being directed to enter sensitive personal information including identity card numbers, contact details and financial data through the fake portal.
The department also flagged three numbers being used by the scam operators: a landline, 0115226126, and two mobile numbers, 0771167739 and 0742756098. The DRP confirmed that no Digital ID registration process is currently being conducted by phone call, mobile app or third-party website, and urged citizens not to provide any personal or financial information to callers using these numbers.
The new alert is the second wave of impersonation activity targeting the department this month. The same landline number, 0115226126, was flagged in early April when the DRP warned of an identity scam ring abusing its hotline alongside a fresh outage of the NIC system. The reuse of the number suggests the same operators may be behind both campaigns, now scaled up with a fake web portal as Sri Lanka prepares for the rollout of biometric Digital IDs.
Citizens who believe they may have entered information into the fake site or shared data with the scam numbers were urged to alert their banks immediately and report the matter to the DRP and police.
