Sri Lanka’s expressway network generated more than Rs. 441 million in revenue from 1,170,830 vehicles between April 10 and April 18, the Road Development Authority (RDA) announced on Sunday.
RDA Director General Anuradha Hettiarachchi said revenue was collected across the Southern Expressway, the Colombo Outer Circular Expressway, the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway and the Central Expressway during the nine-day Sinhala and Tamil New Year travel window.
The day-by-day tally shows traffic peaking on April 10, the day many travellers left Colombo for the holidays, and again on April 18 as the return journey accelerated:
- April 10: 161,847 vehicles – Rs. 59.8 million
- April 11: 153,807 vehicles – Rs. 58.2 million
- April 12: 118,684 vehicles – Rs. 45.2 million
- April 13: 84,211 vehicles – Rs. 31.6 million
- April 14: 91,776 vehicles – Rs. 34.3 million
- April 15: 139,480 vehicles – Rs. 52.5 million
- April 16: Rs. 53 million
- April 17: 138,944 vehicles – Rs. 53 million
- April 18: 141,813 vehicles – over Rs. 53 million
The figures confirm a sharp dip in traffic on April 13 and 14, the two principal Avurudu observance days, before volumes climbed back to pre-festival levels.
The new tally extends the earlier four-day report of Rs. 196 million across 520,000 vehicles released midway through the holiday period. Authorities said the season’s overall expressway usage rose significantly compared with normal weeks, contributing to the higher revenue collection.
