A drug suspect was injured after police opened fire on Sunday when he allegedly attempted to escape custody at the Galgamuwa police station, Ada Derana reported.

The incident occurred as several suspects arrested in connection with narcotics offences were being escorted to a police jeep ahead of an appearance at the Galgamuwa Magistrate’s Court. Two handcuffed suspects bolted from the police vehicle and ran approximately 75 metres from the station gate, police said.

Officers discharged their weapons during the pursuit, hitting one of the men below the knee. The injured suspect, a 32-year-old resident of Galgamuwa, was first admitted to Galgamuwa Base Hospital before being transferred to Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Police did not say whether the second suspect was recaptured, nor whether disciplinary or judicial review will follow the use of firearms during the escape attempt.
