National People’s Power (NPP) minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has said no one can stop President Anura Kumara Dissanayake from being re-elected in 2029, arguing that the government has stabilised the economy and rebuilt public confidence.
Addressing a public gathering, Gamage said Sri Lanka had become “directionless” under previous administrations because of poor decision-making, but insisted the current government had reversed that course, Newswire reported.
He also credited the Sri Lankan diaspora with helping the country record its highest-ever foreign worker remittances, pointing to overseas support as a factor in the administration’s standing.
The remarks add to a wave of ruling-party confidence in its electoral prospects. President Dissanayake recently assured the public there would be no repeat of the 2022 economic crisis, while remittance inflows have featured prominently in the government’s economic messaging. Separately, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva indicated that provincial council elections would be held in 2027.
Dissanayake won the September 2024 presidential election, and the NPP secured a parliamentary supermajority two months later.
