The Kandy District phase of the Gammadda Rebuild initiative continued for a second day on Saturday, with vocational training sessions held at the Kandy Technical College for communities still recovering from Cyclone Ditwah.

The day’s programmes covered masonry, carpentry, electrical work, metal fabrication, plumbing and garment design, with instruction delivered to participants drawn from Ditwah-affected families.

The session was held under the patronage of Wathsala Maramage, Director of the Department of Technical Education and Training. Also in attendance were Kandy Technical College Director K.D.S.K. Kahatapitiya, National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority Director Priyantha Fernando, and Gammadda Assistant Manager Gihan Udyoga.

Australia’s Minderoo Foundation is partnering with Gammadda to strengthen skills-based support for affected communities. The Kandy phase was launched on Friday, building on the Nuwara Eliya phase that started earlier in May.

Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka in November 2025, caused widespread displacement across the central highlands and is now in its sixth month of reconstruction effort. The vocational track aims to give surviving households a route back to livelihood income.
