Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament on Monday that Grade 6 education reforms will be implemented from January 2027, with all preparations now underway.

Addressing the House, Amarasuriya said the committee appointed to review the previously printed Grade 6 modules β€” which had been flagged for issues β€” has completed its study, recommended amendments and finalised its discussions. The revised modules will be sent to print this month and teacher training under the new curriculum will begin in June 2026, the Prime Minister said. Funds for the training have already been allocated.

The January 2027 timeline gives the Education Ministry roughly eight months to print materials, train teachers and complete distribution before the school year begins.

The Grade 6 module rollout has been one of the more contentious early-grade reforms under the National People’s Power administration, which holds the education portfolio at Cabinet level through Amarasuriya. Earlier rounds of the curriculum had been criticised by teacher unions and some parents for content errors and uneven distribution to schools.

Sri Lanka follows a 13-year general education cycle, with Grade 6 marking the first year of secondary schooling. Curriculum reforms at this entry point typically set the framework for upper-secondary subject specialisation in later grades.
