Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the walking path at Independence Square in Colombo, urging the authorities to take immediate action to prevent possible injuries.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP said the walking path — built around 15 years ago during the tenure of then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa — had become a popular spot for regular walkers because of its peaceful, well-maintained environment. He said he, like many others, uses it for morning walks.
However, de Silva said he had never seen the walkway in such disrepair. Protruding rocks along the path pose a danger, particularly to elderly pedestrians, he warned. He also said soil brought in to repair the path had been left unused for months.
The MP called on Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar and the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to address the issue before a serious accident occurs.
