Showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1pm today, with fairly heavy falls above 75 millimetres likely in several provinces, the Department of Meteorology said.

The heavy-rain zone covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces, as well as the Ampara and Kurunegala districts. Morning showers are expected in the Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota districts, while misty conditions are forecast for parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central and Uva provinces and the Galle, Matara, Kaluthara, Vavuniya and Kurunegala districts.

The Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Winds will vary in direction, with speeds of 20โ€“30 kilometres per hour.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in the sea areas off the coast between Hambantota and Batticaloa via Pottuvil, and between Mannar and Hambantota via Colombo and Galle during the evening or night.

The forecast comes as the island transitions toward the south-west monsoon season, with rainfall patterns critical for reservoir levels that feed hydropower generation. Recent weeks have seen the Meteorology Department issue repeated heavy-rain and lightning advisories across multiple districts.
