Two youths were killed in the early hours of Sunday after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a tipper truck on the Horana–Moragahahena road.
The crash occurred near the bend at Kananwila Temple, in the Kananwila area, when the motorcycle struck a tipper truck that was transporting sand, police said. Both riders died as a result of the collision.
Fatal accidents involving motorcycles and heavy vehicles remain a persistent problem on Sri Lanka’s roads, particularly on stretches used by construction and sand-transport lorries. Early-morning hours, when visibility is lower and roads are quieter, account for a significant share of such crashes.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, including the speed and manoeuvring of both vehicles.
The deaths add to a rising national road toll that has prompted repeated calls from authorities for stricter enforcement and greater caution among riders.
