Two cargo vessels carrying imported samba and keeri samba rice have arrived in Sri Lanka from India, providing a significant boost to essential food supplies ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu) festivities.

The Essential Food Commodities, Importers and Traders Association confirmed the arrival of the shipments. Association Chairman Ganesh Vinayagasundaram said the two vessels together carried 5,000 metric tons of samba rice to the island.

Avurudu timing critical

The shipments arrive at a particularly important moment as Sri Lankan families stock up on essential goods for the New Year celebrations on April 13-14. Samba and keeri samba varieties are staple rice types heavily consumed during the festive season.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has been conducting raids on rice traders across the country in recent weeks to prevent hoarding and price gouging ahead of the holiday. Authorities also targeted overpricing in Kegalle district as part of a wider enforcement drive.

Supply pressures

Sri Lanka has faced periodic rice supply constraints in recent months, with domestic production under pressure from weather disruptions linked to Cyclone Ditwah’s aftermath and the broader impact of the Middle East energy crisis on agricultural input costs.

The Indian shipments are expected to help stabilise retail prices in the short term, though market observers note that sustained imports will be needed beyond the festive period to maintain adequate supply levels.
