The renovated Institute of Neurology at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka was officially opened to the public on Sunday following a Rs. 99 million refurbishment, NewsFirst reported.
The Ministry of Health said the facility has been upgraded with the aim of significantly expanding and improving neurological healthcare services in the country. Neurological services focus on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
The renovated institute includes separate male and female wards, each equipped with 22 beds. The ground floor houses a physiotherapy unit, while the third floor contains speech therapy and occupational therapy units along with an auditorium.
Following the opening, neurological units currently operating in a more-than-100-year-old building in Ward Number 16 will be relocated to the upgraded facility, providing improved amenities and a less congested environment for both patients and staff, the ministry said.
The renovation continues a steady rollout of state-hospital capacity upgrades this cycle. In late May the Ministry of Health rolled out five new mammography machines to state hospitals as part of cancer-screening expansion, while earlier in May 18 colposcopy machines were distributed to state hospitals under the cervical cancer programme. A Rs. 20 billion National Hospital project for Anuradhapura is also under construction in the North Central Province.
