Police have arrested a suspect in Kalmunai who allegedly distributed crystal methamphetamine across the Eastern Province while operating under the cover of a courier delivery service, Newswire reported Thursday.

Officers of the Ampara Division Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted the raid on Beach Road, Kalmunai, recovering 107 grams of crystal methamphetamine — known locally as “ice” — concealed inside several toys. The operation was carried out by the Corruption Suppression Unit led by Sub-Inspector Priyankara on the instructions of Officer-in-Charge Chief Inspector Satarasinghe.

Police said the suspect had been supplying narcotics to buyers in the Maruthamunai and Sainthamaruthu areas, using the courier front to move the drugs between handovers.

Alongside the narcotics, officers seized Rs. 39,620 in cash believed to be drug proceeds, an electronic weighing scale, and two mobile phones. Investigations are continuing under the Kalmunai Police.

Eastern Province coastal towns have seen repeated methamphetamine busts over the past year, with traffickers increasingly using delivery and e-commerce cover stories to move small volumes past routine checks. The use of toys as concealment echoes similar recent cases, including a 113 million rupee “kush” bust at Bandaranaike International Airport earlier this month, in which the drug was packed into chocolate wrappers.
