Police have launched an investigation into the fire that broke out at the Kalutara Regional Office of the Inland Revenue Department on Thursday night, Newswire reported on Saturday.
Commissioner General of Inland Revenue Rukdevi P.H. Fernando confirmed the fire caused no damage to the IRDโs tax data systems. Steps are being taken to restore normal operations including re-establishing system connectivity through remote access, the Commissioner General said.
The department said its data infrastructure remained secure and was centrally managed through a dedicated data security centre, meaning records held against Kalutara taxpayer files were not at risk despite the destruction of the regional premises.
Taxpayers ordinarily served at Kalutara can access essential services through the nearest regional office or the Tax Services Division at the IRD head office until the Kalutara branch resumes operations. The cause of the fire and the extent of physical damage to the building have not been disclosed.
The IRD collected over Rs. 600 billion in Q1 2026, exceeding its quarterly target ahead of the Avurudu break.
