Police have placed organised crime suspect Sobanahandi Sanath de Silva, alias “Karandeniye Raju,” on a 72-hour detention order for further investigation following his repatriation from India on Thursday night.

Police spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler confirmed that a special CID team brought Raju back to Sri Lanka after he was arrested by Indian security forces earlier this month. The suspect is wanted in connection with over 15 criminal offences, including murder.

Raju is the brother of “Karandeniya Sudda,” a prominent organised crime syndicate leader. His arrest in India and subsequent repatriation marked a significant cross-border law enforcement operation between the two countries.

The 72-hour detention order allows police to conduct further investigations before deciding whether to seek a formal remand order from court. The CID is expected to question the suspect about his network’s operations and any connections to other ongoing criminal cases.
