Sri Lanka Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and his 20-year-old wife in connection with a series of daytime house break-ins in Kilinochchi, recovering stolen property valued at approximately Rs. 7.5 million.

The arrests were made by officers of the Kilinochchi Crimes Investigation Division during a crime prevention operation in the town. Police said suspicion over the movements of one individual led to questioning that uncovered links to ten reported burglaries involving cash and gold jewellery.

The main suspect, a resident of Shanthapuram engaged in casual employment, was taken into custody along with his wife, who was arrested in Bharathipuram for allegedly assisting in concealing and handling the stolen goods. Investigators said the couple were directly connected to ten daytime house burglaries reported to the Kilinochchi Police.

Part of the stolen gold had been pawned at two private pawn centres and at the Mannar branch of a bank, according to Police, who said steps had been taken to obtain court orders to recover Rs. 4.9 million worth of pawned items. The suspects and the recovered items were produced before the Kilinochchi Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Daytime residential burglaries have emerged as a recurring concern in northern districts. The case adds to a wider pattern of property-crime enforcement coordinated by district-level CID units, distinct from the Colombo Crimes Division operations that have driven recent high-profile arrests such as that of “Gampaha Osman” in the Ganemulla Sanjeewa investigation.
