A formal complaint has been lodged with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) seeking a probe into the assets and liabilities of Cabinet Minister K. D. Lal Kantha.

The complaint

The complaint was filed on Friday by Chamal Sanjeewa, president of the Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCPA). It centres on the minister’s assets declaration submitted on December 26, 2025, covering the years 2024 and 2025, which has recently circulated widely on social media.

Sanjeewa alleges discrepancies between the declaration β€” which shows ownership of immovable assets valued at over Rs. 6.7 crore (approximately Rs. 67 million) β€” and previous public statements by Lal Kantha in which he described himself as facing financial difficulties.

The complainant has called for a comprehensive investigation, citing the public concern the discrepancy has generated.

Accountability context

The complaint adds a new thread to the growing list of active CIABOC cases. The anti-corruption body has been notably active in recent weeks, including issuing an assets declaration notice to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and arresting former SLRC officials over Rambukwella-era irregularities.

This is the first CIABOC complaint targeting a sitting NPP government minister, adding political sensitivity to the accountability push that has so far focused on previous administrations.
