LAUGFS Gas has received a 7,000 metric tonne LPG cargo at its Hambantota terminal as part of efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply during the upcoming Sinhala-Tamil New Year (Avurudu) festive season.

The shipment, sourced from Netherlands-based SHV Energy and carried by the vessel ANDOVER, arrived ahead of the April 13–14 holiday period when domestic gas demand peaks for traditional Avurudu cooking.

β€œWith this shipment, LAUGFS Gas confirms that adequate stocks have been secured to meet domestic demand throughout the festive season,” Director and Cluster CEO Dr. Niroshan J. Peiries said in a statement.

The company said it had taken proactive measures to expedite filling and distribution operations across all regions to minimise market disruptions during the high-demand period.

The supply assurance comes just two days after LAUGFS raised the price of its 12.5 kg domestic cylinder by Rs. 1,070 to Rs. 5,700 β€” its largest single increase in recent years. Litro Gas Lanka simultaneously raised its 12.5 kg cylinder price by Rs. 775 to Rs. 4,765, with both companies citing higher import costs linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the disruption of Gulf supply routes after Israeli strikes on Iranian petrochemical facilities at Asaluyeh.

The price hikes have already triggered a Rs. 20 increase in the price of a rice packet at restaurants and renewed scrutiny of the LP gas pricing formula, with the SJB-aligned trade union movement accusing both distributors of profiteering by re-pricing pre-hike inventory at the new rates.
