Police raided an illegally operated television transmission station in Mount Lavinia on Tuesday and arrested one suspect, seizing broadcasting equipment worth approximately Rs. 10 million, Ada Derana reported.

The operation was carried out by the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crimes Investigation Division at a building on Attidiya Road within the Mount Lavinia Police Division. The raid was conducted on intelligence about the operation of an unauthorised broadcasting station, following a search warrant issued by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

Officers from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) assisted in the operation, helping identify the unauthorised transmission setup. During the raid, communication and broadcasting equipment allegedly illegally imported and used to transmit television signals without authorisation was uncovered.

A 55-year-old Maldivian national residing in Kalubowila was arrested in connection with the case and handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police for further questioning. Police also seized the equipment, valued at around Rs. 10 million.

Sri Lanka’s broadcasting regulator has stepped up enforcement against unlicensed TV and radio installations over the past year, frequently working with police divisional CIDs to identify operators using imported equipment outside the licensing framework set by the TRCSL.
