Acting Kalutara Magistrate Bandula Weerasinghe has ordered a patient accused of sexually assaulting a female doctor at Nagoda Teaching Hospital to be remanded until April 27, Daily Mirror reported on Thursday.

The order was issued at the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court in connection with an incident reported at the hospital, which serves as one of the largest teaching facilities in the Western Province. Further details of the alleged assault — including the circumstances and the identity of the accused — have not been publicly released as proceedings continue.

Nagoda Teaching Hospital has been at the centre of several earlier incidents involving staff safety, and doctors’ associations have repeatedly raised concerns about violence and harassment faced by health workers inside public hospitals. The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and hospital unions have lobbied for tighter security deployment at ward-level access points and for faster police response on hospital premises.

The next court date for the accused is April 27, when the magistrate is expected to review the case again. No further hearings or charges have been announced at this stage.
