Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has accused the National People’s Power (NPP) government of politicising the investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, alleging selective targeting of individuals and misplaced blame for the intelligence failures that preceded the bombings.

Speaking to journalists in Colombo on Monday, Rajapaksa said people allegedly linked to the financing of the attacks — including a former National List figure he identified as “Ibrahim” — were being shielded, while former officials were being pursued on questionable grounds. He did not elaborate on the identity of the “Ibrahim” he referenced.

He flagged what he described as inconsistencies in recent arrests, citing the detention of former minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan in connection with the Easter case while simultaneously being produced before courts over a separate 2005 murder investigation. He also questioned the credibility of the probe against former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, who has filed a writ petition challenging his detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Rajapaksa further claimed that key intelligence warnings before the Easter attacks had been ignored by officials who are now central to the ongoing investigations, and that recent decisions to release property while failing to act on suspected financiers had eroded public confidence in the probe.

He rejected claims linking the Rajapaksa family to the attacks and urged authorities to run a fair, impartial investigation that focused on those directly connected to the bombings.

The SLPP statement comes on the seventh anniversary of the attacks, the same day Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith warned that progress in the probe was being obstructed by those it was closing in on.
