Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa said the party will move forward while learning from past mistakes, speaking to media on April 15 after participating in New Year rituals at Carlton House in Tangalle.
Extending Sinhala and Tamil New Year wishes, Rajapaksa described the festival as a shared cultural heritage that must be protected and passed on to future generations. He acknowledged the country is going through a “challenging period” but expressed confidence that unity and a positive outlook could see it through.
“We must understand that everyone makes mistakes, learn from them, and move forward,” he said, adding that society should acknowledge past errors while preserving cultural values.
Rajapaksa highlighted the importance of youth empowerment, expressing concern over what he described as declining trust in young people. He said isolated incidents should not be used to judge the entire youth population, and that Sri Lanka’s future depends on harnessing talent and strengthening national unity.
The remarks represent a conciliatory tone from the SLPP’s national organiser at a time when the former ruling party is in opposition. The Rajapaksa family faces ongoing accountability proceedings, including CIABOC asset declaration requirements, while the NPP government navigates multiple crises including fuel rationing and the Middle East energy shock.
