Three people drowned while bathing at the Daluwa Estuary in Norochcholai on Saturday evening, police said.
The deceased have been identified as two young women aged 18 and 19, and a 25-year-old man, all residents of the Puttalam area, according to Ada Derana. Police said the incident occurred at around 5.30 p.m. on Saturday.
Norochcholai Police are conducting further investigations.
The drownings come weeks after the Public Security Ministry rolled out the National Drowning Prevention Mechanism, launched in early May after a string of deaths at inland reservoirs and water bodies through the dry-season weekends. A separate Saturday incident in mid-May saw two brothers drown in a Kekirawa quarry pit.
