The Parliamentary complex will undergo a special security inspection in the coming days ahead of the May 8 address by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, parliamentary sources told The Island.
The sweep will cover the entire Parliamentary complex, including Members’ lounges and wardrobes, with the high-security zone also subject to inspection. Public gallery access during the visit will be restricted to invited guests only, and additional access controls and screening procedures are expected throughout the visit period given the presence of a foreign head of state within the precincts.
Week’s legislative business
The House will sit daily from May 5 to May 8 following decisions taken at the Committee on Parliamentary Business under Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, the Parliament Media Division said quoting Secretary General Kushani Rohanadeera.
- May 5 — Orders and Regulations under the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act, followed by adjournment-time questions.
- May 6 — Second Reading of the Rescue, Rehabilitation and Insolvency (Corporate and Personal) Bill.
- May 7 — Regulations under the National Transport Commission Act, the Motor Traffic Act and the Immigration and Emigration Act, with debates on resolutions under the Public Security Ordinance and the Essential Public Services Act.
- May 8 — President Tô Lâm to arrive at Parliament around 11.05am and address the House. Afternoon proceedings will resume with Private Members’ Motions covering sports education pathways, vocational training awareness, migrant worker welfare, local government governance, professional title misuse and oversight of utilities and petroleum-related industries.
The Insolvency Bill on May 6 and the Port City regulations on May 5 are the major substantive items. The address by Tô Lâm — already confirmed for May 8 — will form the centrepiece of the week and would mark the first time a sitting Vietnamese President addresses Sri Lanka’s legislature.
