Six people were killed in separate road accidents involving motorcycles and three-wheelers across Sri Lanka on Thursday, as police warned of heightened risks during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year travel rush.
All six fatalities occurred on April 10, with incidents reported in multiple districts.
Incidents reported nationwide
In Horana, a motorcycle veered off the road near Pokunuwita Junction, killing a 45-year-old pillion rider from Kiriella. A 32-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a motorcycle in Padukka. In Kosgoda, a 73-year-old cyclist was killed in a collision.
Two incidents were reported in Girandurukotte — a 55-year-old motorcyclist died after hitting a dog and crashing into a tree, while a 39-year-old woman driving a three-wheeler was killed in a collision with a van. In Mawatagama, a 74-year-old man died when his three-wheeler collided with a lorry.
Police are investigating all incidents and have arrested several drivers involved in the crashes.
Avurudu travel warning
The fatalities underscore concerns about road safety during the Avurudu holiday period, when millions travel across the country. Police have activated a WhatsApp reporting line for reckless driving and the SLTB has deployed extra buses to manage the rush.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, particularly two-wheeler and three-wheeler riders, who account for a disproportionate share of road fatalities.
