Former State Minister Premalal Jayasekara has been released on bail by the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court, a day after his arrest over an alleged firearm threat.
The court set bail at Rs. 25,000 in cash with a personal surety of Rs. 1 million. The magistrate also ordered that Jayasekara’s passport be impounded as a condition of release, and warned that any attempt to influence witnesses would result in the cancellation of bail.
The former parliamentarian was arrested on Monday by officers from the Crimes Investigation Division of the Nuwara Eliya Police. The arrest followed a complaint that Jayasekara had displayed his pistol and threatened an individual during an altercation between two groups while visiting Nuwara Eliya with his family.
The case is scheduled to be taken up again on October 9.
