The Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Kamal Amarasinghe, was further remanded until April 20 by the Kurunegala Pilaessa Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after being produced before the bench by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Amarasinghe was arrested over allegations of aiding and abetting the alteration of a chassis number of a cab and facilitating a fraudulent vehicle registration. He remains in CID custody pending further investigation.
The case against the head of Sri Lanka’s motor vehicle registration authority is the latest in a series of high-profile accountability actions by law enforcement agencies. The CIABOC has been active in pursuing corruption cases, while the CID has also been leading the investigation into the NDB Bank fraud — one of the largest banking frauds in Sri Lanka’s history.
Other ongoing accountability proceedings include the Mahinda Rajapaksa CIABOC assets declaration case and the Pillayan murder confession.
The next court hearing is scheduled for April 20 at the Kurunegala Pilaessa Magistrate’s Court.
