The Rotary Club of Colombo Centennial has donated 100 intraocular lenses to the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society to support free sight-restoring surgeries for patients unable to afford treatment.
The handover took place at the Eye Donation Society’s premises in Colombo 07 under the club’s “Gift of Sight” project. Intraocular lenses are a key component in cataract surgery and are used to restore vision in patients with cataracts and other vision impairments.
The Rotary Club said the project was identified after consultations with healthcare professionals who highlighted continuing demand for donated medical supplies to support underprivileged patients. The Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society conducts surgeries free of charge at its hospital in Colombo 07, treating patients referred from across the country.
Representing the Rotary Club of Colombo Centennial at the handover were President Shervon Fernandopulle, Secretary Andrew Pangoda, Treasurer Kishan Yahampath, Club Learning Facilitator Gagan Bulathsinghala, Community Services Director Rasika Galappaththi, Foundation Chair Randika Perera and member Yuka LaTulippe.
The Eye Donation Society — established under the legacy of Dr. Hudson Silva — is one of the world’s largest cornea suppliers and has historically exported corneas to more than 50 countries, with surgeries within Sri Lanka delivered at no cost to recipients.
