The Ministry of Education has announced that the second phase of the first school term for government and government-approved schools concludes today, marking the start of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year (Avurudu) holiday period.

The announcement provides clarity for parents and students following schedule disruptions caused by Cyclone Ditwah in late March, which forced closures in northern districts including Point Pedro and Mullaitivu. Schools in the worst-affected areas may follow adjusted timetables.

Avurudu falls on April 14, with government holidays and celebrations spanning the week of April 13-18. The ministry has communicated the second term’s start date to schools.

The Education Ministry had earlier issued a directive to schools to limit Avurudu-related events and expenses, urging restraint during the ongoing economic pressures facing families.
