Police have arrested a neighbour of a 79-year-old woman who was found murdered inside her home in the Mookalangamuwa area of Seeduwa, with her body concealed in a travelling bag in a bedroom.

Investigators were called to the house after residents reported a foul odour emanating from the property. On entering, officers discovered the woman’s body hidden inside the bag. The deceased, a long-term resident of the area, had been living alone.

Initial inquiries pointed to a strangulation death and signs of deliberate tampering at the scene. Investigators found that the CCTV cameras installed at the house had been removed and the telephone line had been cut.

Police said the suspect was identified through CCTV footage obtained from neighbouring properties. He has been described as a neighbour residing in close proximity to the victim’s home.

A magisterial inquiry into the death and the post-mortem examination were scheduled for Thursday. Further investigations are continuing.
